Terms and Conditions for Sporran Browser Extension

Application of These Terms and Conditions

For the usage for the Sporran Browser Extension these Terms and Conditions shall apply. The Services are provided to you via software (the “Software” or “Sporran”) created and run by B.T.E. BOTLabs Trusted Entity GmbH (hereinafter referred to as “BTE”, “us”, “we” or “our”) as defined below. The software is published and you are free to check out the code for the different variations of the Sporran under https://github.com/BTE-Trusted-Entity/sporran-extension.

PLEASE READ THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS CAREFULLY TO ENSURE THAT YOU UNDERSTAND EACH PROVISION. IF YOU DO NOT AGREE TO ALL OF THE TERMS, DO NOT ACCESS OR USE THE SOFTWARE.

YOU ACCEPT THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS, EITHER BY CLICKING TO SIGNIFY ACCEPTANCE, OR BY TAKING ANY ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING ACTIONS: ACCESSING OR USING THE APPLICABLE SOFTWARE, YOU AGREE TO BE BOUND BY THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS.

YOU REPRESENT AND WARRANT THAT YOU ARE 18 YEARS OLD OR OLDER AND HAVE THE RIGHT AND AUTHORITY TO ENTER AND COMPLY WITH THE TERMS OF USE.

What Sporran is

The Sporran wallet allows you to manage your digital identities and sign transactions with these digital identities on the KILT blockchain as well as to manage your KILT DIDs and credentials issued to them.

Therefore, with the full version you can:

  • Create a private/public key pair that represents your digital identity, an off-chain DID for that digital identity and a backup phrase for recovery
  • Create a password for each digital identity in order to access it
  • Check balances of your KILT Coins read from the blockchain or third-party applications
  • Display the address of your digital identity via a string and a QR code e.g. for copying or showing it to others for a transfer of KILT Coins to your digital identity
  • Initiate and sign transactions with these digital identities to be processed by the KILT blockchain
  • Use these digital identities with services that allow their usage e.g. to initiate transactions and sign these transactions through Sporran
  • Create on-chain DIDs out of the off-chain DIDs
  • Receive credentials issued to your on- or off-chain DID.
  • Check the status of your credentials. The status of a credential can either be Pending (the attestation process has been started but the credential has not been attested yet), Attested (the credential is attested by the attester and is valid), Revoked (the attestation of the credential has been revoked by the attester and the credential is not valid anymore) or Invalid (when your DID is deleted all credentials connected to it become invalid).
  • Present your full Credential or parts of it. As a user who has an on-chain DID and has created a credential with said on-chain DID, you can present your attested credential. To do so, you download said credentials in the “Manage on-chain DID” section inside Sporran. You can choose here, if you want to present all the information from said credential or use selective disclosure to show only certain information. Once you click “continue” the credential will be downloaded as a json file. This json file you can present by sharing it like any other file or you can upload to and reference via a service endpoint.

In some versions of the Sporran, only parts of the listed features are enabled.

The data generated in and for your digital identities is stored locally on your device. The balances displayed are based on the information currently stored on the KILT blockchain. It is not possible to know something about the DID by knowing something about the KILT identity and vice versa.

When upgrading an off-chain DID to an on-chain DID, your credential issued to it stays valid. An on-chain DID is written onto the KILT blockchain. All information in your on-chain DIDs are publicly available on the KILT blockchain. This includes the DID’s public keys, the DID document with any information inside, e.g. if you have added them service endpoints, web3name etc.

When removing your on-chain DID, you have no DID anymore. All credentials issued to this Identity’s DID become invalid. You cannot get new credentials for this Identity. The service endpoint is written into the DID document. It consists of an URI with a type and a number.

The web3name is a string unique to all DIDs on the KILT chain.

Please make sure you select a safe password and remember it.

If you forget your password or you are using a new device, you can recover access to your digital identity only with your backup phrase.

IMPORTANT: If you lose your password and backup phrase, you will no longer have access to your digital identity or the assets belonging to that digital identity. No one will be able to restore it for you. We have no knowledge of your data, passwords or backup phrase.

Please write down your backup phrase correctly and in the correct order and store it safely. Write it down with paper and pen and put it somewhere that no one else can find and read it. Store your backup phrase safely because it is your unique access to your digital identity(s). If the backup phrase falls into the hands of others, they will have full access to your digital identity and be able to sign transactions on your behalf – and on other devices – even without knowing your password.

If you lose your backup phrase you will not be able to recover your digital identity, for example when your device breaks or is lost.

Liability

B.T.E. BOTLabs Trusted Entity GmbH (hereinafter referred to as "BTE") is liable for damages that are based on an intentional or grossly negligent breach of duty by BTE, its legal representatives or various agents.

In the event of a breach of essential contractual duties, BTE shall only be liable for the contractually typical, foreseeable damage if this was simply cause by negligence. Significant contractual obligations are those whose fulfilment enables the proper execution of the contract in the first place and whose compliance you can regularly rely on.

The limitation of the two preceding paragraphs also apply to the legal representatives and various agents of BTE, if claims are asserted directly against them. The liability limitations resulting from the two preceding paragraphs do not apply insofar as BTE fraudulently concealed the defect or assumed a guarantee for the quality of Sporran.

Liability for culpable injury to life, limb and health and liability under Product Liability Act remain unaffected.

Any additional claims for damages are excluded.

Risk information

The following risk information contains a list of risks associated with the use of the Sporran wallet. The list is not exhaustive. It is not excluded that further unknown or unpredictable risks exist.

Loss of backup phrase and password will result in a complete loss of accessibility of the Sporran wallet in question.

At first: we have had two different security expert companies carry out a security check (audit), each of which came to the conclusion that the Sporran (software) is secure according to the current state of the art. But: the further development in the information technology and other computing sectors pose a threat to password security and integrity of software-based-systems.

Sporran is installed on your system as a browser extension. For the security of your password and backup phrase, it is essential that your system is not compromised with malware. Please make sure that this is the case, because malware running unnoticed in the background, for example a key tracker, represents a major security risk for you.

If you suspect someone knows your password or found your backup phrase or if you are just uncertain about it, immediately open a new digital identity with a different backup phrase, transfer your assets to the new digital identity and make sure to clear and terminate usage of your compromised digital identities.

Sporran communicates with the KILT blockchain and depends on its functionality. Errors or dysfunctionalities, including failure of the KILT blockchain or the technical ecosystem in which it lives, may adversely affect the Sporran.

Sporran, and in particular the underlying software application, may be the subject of hacking or other malicious interference by unauthorised third parties resulting in the loss, theft or other violation of data.

Because Sporran is built on open-source software, there is a risk that a third party may unconsciously or knowingly incorporate errors leading to potential adverse consequences for the usability and functionality of the Sporran.

Communication via internet-based systems is fundamentally susceptible to data/information being read out and possibly even changed. We have no influence on which processes (now and in the future) run in the background of the web browser used (Chrome, Firefox).

Right to Change the Software and These Terms and Conditions

BTE reserves the right to change the Software as well as the commercial and non-commercial conditions for its usage.

BTE also reserves the right to change these Terms and Conditions at any time for any future products in our sole discretion.

Such changes will be made via uploading new Terms and Conditions, the Software and/or other information to the Website and any usage of the Sporran downloaded after this will fall under these new Terms and Conditions, will be handled by the new version of the Software and will be for the commercial and non-commercial, while existing Credentials acquired previous to this change shall remain untouched.
